INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The holidays officially kicked off Friday night during the 52nd annual Circle of Lights in downtown Indianapolis.
Crews started setting up for the celebration on Tuesday morning. There’s now 20 trees, 52 garland stands, wreaths, reindeer, 26 toy soldiers and sailors and thousands of colored lights around Monument Circle.
The pre-show featured several special guests, including The Voice winner Josh Kaufman and performers from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration.
Santa Claus made an appearance around 7:50 p.m. and the lights turned on shortly after that. A fireworks show ended the celebration.
The monument will stay lit through January 10.
Thousands of people attended the event, including Heather Cummins, who says Circle of Lights is a family tradition.
“We came down here to watch the lighting of the tree. We’ve been doing it for like 20 years and this is the first year we got to bring our 2-year-old grandson,” Cummins said.
It was also a special night for two lovebirds who got engaged as the tree lit up Friday night.
