LOGANSPORT, Ind. (AP) — Logansport residents and businesses are being required to register their alarm systems with police under a new ordinance that aims to crack down on false calls.
A new ordinance approved in September requires homes or businesses with alarms that detect unauthorized entry, fire, smoke and excess heat to fill out questionnaires that include owner contact information.
Police Chief Mike Clark tells the Pharos-Tribune the information will be entered into a computer system that police officers and dispatchers can access.
The ordinance calls for a $50 citation after the third false alarm, with fines increasing up to $200 for repeated false calls.
The ordinance excludes false alarms triggered by weather, vehicle alarms and those in buildings owned by state and federal government entities.
Enforcement begins Jan. 1.
