1 dead following police chase, standoff

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A vehicle pursuit and standoff with police on Tuesday afternoon ended when the suspect shot himself in the head, according to police.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the DEA were attempting to stop a vehicle involved in an illegal drug transaction around 12:51 p.m.

The vehicle initially stopped along I-70 eastbound. However, when officers approached the vehicle the driver took off at a high rate of speed.

While trying to avid police the driver struck a tree at the corner of Raymond Street and Cole Street.

The suspect refused to exit the vehicle causing police to call IMPD Swat Team to the scene

When SWAT approached the vehicle the driver had a self-infected gunshot wound to his head. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the driver was not released on Tuesday evening. No shots were fired by any police agencies on scene.

No other occupants were inside the vehicle during the chase.
