INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Monday was projected to be Fed Ex’s biggest shipping date in history.  It’s also the busiest day of the year for the United States Post Office.  Something both are seeing a huge boost in, are packages due to a growing e-commerce.  For more and more Americans, a couple clicks of a mouse are much more convenient than fighting holiday crowds.

FedEx hired 50,000 seasonal employees across the board.  700 were hired here in Indianapolis and many of those are expected to become permanent part-time positions after the holiday season ends.  Typically the company has between 75 and 80 flights a day.  Right now there are upwards of 125.

“Indianapolis is home to the 2nd largest worldwide hub in the FedEx network,” said FedEx spokesperson Paula Bosler.

The company is expecting a record-breaking year.  It’s projecting to move 290 million shipments between Black Friday and Christmas Eve.  That’s an 8.8 percent increase over 2013.   Monday, Dec. 15 is projected to be the biggest day of the season with a forecasted 22.6 million shipments moved around the world.

Desmond Dickson was shipping products out to his customers.  He said the online ordering season has been huge.  He also noticed the big crowds at shipment centers.

“Yes, a lot of people.  But, we’ve basically been in and out so they’ve been doing pretty good this year,” said Dickson.

“Yea!  To my parents to my parents that live in Japan, so I send all the packages!” said Junko Rouge.

USPS is expecting its largest year since 2011 with a projected 15.5 billion cards, letters and packages from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve.  USPS says carriers will be out earlier beginning around 6 a.m and stay out later to around 8 p.m.

“So, if you hear your mailbox rattling early in the morning it’s OK.  It’s your mail carrier coming to deliver holiday cheer to you,” said Mary Dando, USPS spokesperson.

The National Retail Federation says forecasts this season to have up to an 11% online sales growth over 2013.  That would make December 15th the biggest mail day during the biggest mail season in FedEx history.

“It’s clearer every year.  We see Cyber Monday and Black Friday and it all sort of runs together,” said Bosley.

FedEx has rented extra trucks through local central Indiana companies to help out during the busy times.  Central Indiana USPS helps out Amazon by supplying a Sunday delivery.
