NORTH VERNON, Ind. (AP) — Police say a woman who helped lead restoration of an early 1900s theater in southern Indiana has died a few days after being hit by a car while crossing a street.

The North Vernon Police Department says 87-year-old Hulda Mae Reichenbach died Saturday at the University of Louisville trauma center.

The Tribune of Seymour reports the North Vernon woman was hit Wednesday evening while walking across a street. Police say the driver told officers she didn’t see Reichenbach, who was wearing dark clothing.

Reichenbach and her husband, William, led a $1.3 million renovation of North Vernon’s Park Theatre Civic Center that was completed in 2003.

Police say the driver who hit Reichenbach wasn’t impaired or speeding and no citations were issued. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
