INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police said a man attempted to abduct a woman while she was walking with a group of friends in Fountain Square on Wednesday night.
According to the 30-year-old victim, she was leaving Las Margaritas and heading to the White Rabbit on Prospect Street for a show around 9 p.m. when a man jumped out of a van and grabbed her by the collar. He then told her to get in his van.
“My first thought when he grabbed me, I was like, what kind of screwed up joke is this?” the victim told 24-Hour News 8. “He opened the passenger door, immediately grabbed me by the side of my coat and scarf and proceeded to try to throw me in the van, multiple times, threatening me to get in van.”
She says she fought him off by remembering something her brother told her years ago.
“Went back to a lesson when I was about 8 years old. My older brother always told me if anybody ever tried to take me to always go dead weight and throw yourself down,” she said. “I was able to throw myself down on the ground, he was dragging me by my feet, across the sidewalk.”
The woman said two men, including a firefighter, came to help her as she was on the ground.
There are no visible signs of the altercation and the man eventually just drove away.
She says despite this experience, her thoughts on the re-emerging Fountain Square will not change.
“Fountain Square is my favorite place to spend time,” she said. “One thing I said was don’t let this give fountain square a bad name, this has nothing to do with Fountain Square.”
Despite this scary encounter, the victim still wears a smile.
“We’ll carry on but we’re going to be a lot more cautious, mace in hand,” she said.
The suspect is described as a white man that was taller than six feet. IMPD asks you to call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS if you have any information on this incident.
