INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A group of Indianapolis-area firefighters who saw a local family lose everything in a fire knew they had to help.

The Decatur Township Fire Department recently fought the fire on Sharrob Road. Officials say the fire caused extensive damage to the home and destroyed almost everything the family owned.

Firefighters say the children were extremely upset about the loss of their dog and their mother was devastated with their grief and realizing everything was gone.

The department says they knew they wanted to help. They collected money to buy household items and received a donation as well. When firefighters went shopping for the gifts, they were met by people who were touched by the family’s story.

A man at Walmart gave firefighters $100, followed by another individual who overheard the story and gave them $20 from his wallet.

Even after the shopping trip, donations kept coming in. Firefighters reunited with the family and unloaded a truck full of gifts. The department extended a thank you on their Facebook page “to everyone who helped make the holiday season a little better for a family who suffered a tragedy.”
