MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — A 22 year-old man has been sentenced to 85 years in prison in the bludgeoning death of a 69-year-old retired teacher in northern Indiana.
The News-Dispatch reports Judge Kathleen Lang sentenced Ryan Phelps on Tuesday for murder and robbery in the death of Gerald Peters. Lang said Peters orchestrated the robbery and facilitated the murder of Peters, who had given Phelps work and a place to stay.
Lang says Phelps has refused to accept responsibility for his actions and has expressed no remorse. Phelps says he plans to appeal.
Three others also were charged in the case. Trevon Walker is scheduled to stand trial in February on a murder charge. Two others have reached plea deals that have not yet been approved by a judge.
