Last minute shoppers in good spirits

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It’s the last day for Santa at Castleton Square Mall but it’s the first day of shopping for Janae Batie.

She has a list.

“Some for my mom,” she said, “my sisters, my grandma, my dad.”

There are good reasons for some shoppers to be out at the last minute.

“Because what I hoped to get online wasn’t available online,” said Patrick Terry, “and so I had to brave the elements.”

For others it’s part of a plan.

“I try to cram it all in in a couple days,” said Chad Cook, “which is probably not a good idea.”

Cindy Sheets sat down to rest after she completed her shopping chores. She usually finishes in November.

“Unfortunately, I’m a procrastinator,” she said. “I ran out of time, so, I just got my last person checked off my list, I’m happy to say.”

And then there’s Gail Guynn.

“Well, I’ve shopped for everybody else except for myself,” she said, “so I said, I’m coming out here today to just shop for me.”

It’s a good time for sales and discounts as retailers try to make the most out of the busiest shopping season of the year.

Gail helped.

“I got a necklace,” she said. “I got a jacket. I got a couple of pair of shoes and I probably shouldn’t say anything else.”

No one at the mall minds. They need people like Gail because the holiday shopping train is leaving town.

A Castleton Square representative says it’s been a smooth shopping season this year. Good weather may have something to do with that.

Economists, however, predicted lower sales this year than in 2013.

As the night wore on, and shopping malls closed after another successful Christmas Eve, some stores remained open. Toys R Us stayed open until 9 PM Christmas Eve.

The parking lot was full in Castleton. Many told us they’d worked all week, so now was the time to get their shopping done.

“Been working, been working hard,” said one shopper. “I work every day, so this is the day I decided to call in and do my last minute shopping.”

“Shout out to the procrastinators,” said Tomeaca George. “I do it every year; I get stuck in the rush. It’s good for the blood.”

Next on the list? Last minute wrapping for these last minute shoppers.

“It’s a very exciting holiday. I can’t wait to wake up in the morning. I love Christmas,” said George. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
