Beech Grove police look for answers in unprovoked stabbing

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) – A puzzling investigation has left some shoppers uneasy in Beech Grove after police released surveillance video of a suspect stabbing a customer in a Lowes parking lot.

In the video you can clearly see the suspect jump out of a four door sedan in the 4000 block of Emerson Avenue. The mysterious man runs straight toward a customer loading items in his vehicle. What happens next is an unprovoked attack. The suspect pepper sprays and then stabs the victim before driving off into the night.

During the investigation police discovered the suspect did take any money. There is no known relationship between the suspect and the victim and no previous encounters. Police described the attack as random.

“That’s what makes this kind of unique, in that the victim is just going about his business,” said Beech Grove Captain Bob Mercuri.

The crime happened on Dec. 3. Police recently received the video and later released it to drum up possible leads on the mysterious man.

“You have to be very careful,” said Reggie Bell, as he loaded his car in a parking lot.

In a three minute interview, Mercuri added that unprovoked attacks can be difficult to prevent. However, he encouraged everyone to be aware of your surroundings when carrying out your daily activities.

“You can never be ready for everything, but the simplest thing is simply be aware of your surroundings,” said Mercuri.

As far as the victim, remarkably he was not seriously injured.
