Fan wears jersey for 370 days to meet Reggie Wayne

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – He may be small, but a 9-year-old Plainfield boy might just be Reggie Wayne’s biggest fan after choosing to wear the Colts wide receiver’s jersey daily for more than a year.

Dylan Eickhoff received the number 87 attire on Christmas Day 2013. The young fan decided to wear the jersey every day in the hopes of having the opportunity to meet his favorite player.

The single shirt would make appearances on a beach during spring break, on the field for baseball practice and even at a family member’s wedding ceremony.

“My mom tried to make me wear something nice and I told her I wanted to wear my jersey, but she made me wear a bow tie,” Eickhoff said.

Eickhoff’s mother said the attempt to get Wayne’s attention became a family affair. A Twitter account was created and siblings helped come up with unique photographs to take of Dylan wearing his constant wardrobe.

“We’ve all kind of embraced football a little bit. We all have really embraced Reggie Wayne and really his sisters were not into football,” Rhonda Eickhoff said.

Dylan would don the jersey for 370 days until his dream came true.

On Tuesday, Eickhoff met the Colts veteran during one of Wayne’s regular radio appearances. Wayne said he felt honored by this one example of how he hopes his professional career has touched the community.

“To people like Dylan, I appreciate all the support and hopefully I can continue to make you smile,” Wayne said.
