Lights, garland come down at Monument Circle

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Dozens of volunteers braved the frigid temperatures to take down the Circle of Lights.

Indy’s holiday centerpiece on Monument Circle includes almost 48,000 lights and 52 strands of garland.

That means, they took down and packed away more than six miles of electrical wire and more than two miles of garland. The IBEW Local 481 does this each year.

Saturday morning, those volunteers admitted it was a cold job. But they say all the work to put it up and take it down every year is well worth it.

“For the last 52 years, it’s our gift to the city of Indianapolis. And we know the community really enjoys this every holiday season,” Steve Menser with the IBEW Local 481 said.

It takes 200 volunteers to put the display up each November and about 75 to take it down.
