Full-time SWAT making Indy streets safer

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It’s been more than six months since the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department placed it’s SWAT team in full-time service.

Historically, SWAT teams are trained officers who respond immediately to the most dangerous crime scenes. However, in the summer of 2014, IMPD started using their SWAT on routine calls. According to IMPD the switch has produced results.

In just six months the SWAT team has taken 36 guns off the streets, they’ve been on 283 runs, and lastly they’ve conducted 723 interviews that have generated critical tips.

Despite the proven results, not everyone appeared to be in favor with the changes.

“SWATs are quite essential when you have to go into drug houses and stuff like that, for the main stream they are unnecessary,” said resident Charles Jones.

Recently, IMPD said they are adding to their recruit class, but that doesn’t mean SWAT’s work load will lessen. The department plans to continue it’s SWAT team efforts for the foreseeable future.

“A lot of times it’s positive, they know that we are out there,” said IMPD Lt. Tom Sellas.

Currently the SWAT has about 38 members. In addition to the extra duties, SWAT members also work with police districts and detectives.
