INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police have identified a young teenager who died overnight after a shooting in a neighborhood near East 38th Street and North Post Road, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said.

Police say the shooting victim is Ashton Harting, 13, of Indianapolis.

IMPD officers were sent to the 3700 block of Decamp Drive just before 2 a.m. Monday after someone reported hearing gunfire in the neighborhood. While they were on their way, officers found out juveniles were knocking on doors saying someone had been shot.

Officers found Harting on a sidewalk in the 3600 block of Decamp Drive. He appeared to have a gunshot wound. Although CPR was attempted, Harting didn’t survive.

“Why was a 13-year-old out on the streets at 1:30 in the morning anyway,” said neighbor Cherrell Douglas.

Rumors are swirling about what transpired moments before the shooting, however, police have yet to release a motive.

IMPD is investigating the crime and asked that anyone with information contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477) or by texting INDYCS plus the tip to CRIMES (274637).

A vigil was held Monday night for Harting:
