Ex-IMPD commander won’t be prosecuted

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A former IMPD commander won’t be criminally prosecuted after an incident at Arlington High School.

Javonte Williams, 17, said he was assaulted by security officer William Benjamin at Arlington High School. Benjamin is a former high-ranking IMPD commander who once headed IMPD’s investigations division before retiring.

After an investigation, the prosecutor’s office decided not to proceed with a case against Benjamin. Part of that determination, according to a memo from the prosecutor’s office, was because Williams was “very argumentative.” The memo goes on to say, “Javonte Williams was very disrespectful and used abusive language towards Captain Benjamin.”

The investigation found it “very unlikely” that Benjamin would be convicted by a court or jury for battery.
