Fire consumes third floor apartment, residents evacuated

Fort Wayne, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne firefighters extinguished a fire at an apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to the Hampton Court apartments at East State Boulevard and Florida Drive shortly before 4 a.m.

Firefighters found smoke and flames at a third story apartment on the u-shaped building’s north side. The apartment was located towards the courtyard of the complex.

Part of the three-story building was evacuated while crews extinguished the flames. It’s unknown how many residents were evacuated. A fire department report said apartments near the fire were evacuated and smoke detectors had alert residents on the second and third floors.

Crews had most of the fire out in under 20 minutes.

No one was home when the first started and firefighters were able to rescue two cats.

No serious injuries were reported.
