BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WISH) — The pastor and police chaplain arrested for allegedly stealing from a Brownsburg Goodwill has actually been under investigation since December, according to a new release from the Brownsburg Police Department.

The department conducted a joint investigation with Goodwill Loss Prevention after receiving allegations that 45-year-old Denis Roy had stolen from their business several times. It happened again on Monday, when an employee of the Goodwill reportedly saw Roy take clothing from the store without paying. Roy was confronted in the store’s parking lot and according to police, ultimately admitted to the theft.

Roy was booked into the Hendricks County Jail, but bonded out a few hours later. Police Chief Michael Dove released a statement Tuesday afternoon, regarding the arrest of one of his department’s own chaplains:

“I am truly saddened over the events that took place yesterday regarding Mr. Roy,” writes Dove. “Mr. Roy has been placed in a position of trust and over the years has been of assistance to the Department and members of the Brownsburg community. However, this type of behavior cannot and will not be tolerated. Therefore, criminal charges have been filed against Mr. Roy. Effective immediately, Mr. Roy’s position as a Department Chaplain has been suspended pending administrative review. I sincerely hope that Mr. Roy and his family can put this behind them and find the guidance that they need to move forward with their lives.”

Roy is a pastor at New Day Church in Brownsburg. Church members did not return calls for comment. 24-Hour News 8 also contacted Roy by phone and e-mail, but were told that he is unavailable.

Roy does, however, respond to a question regarding the “vision for your ministry” on the website. He writes, “I have a passion to see every person set free from the things that hold them back and to be released to become everything that God destined them to be.”

Brownsburg Goodwill officials have also advised police that they are not interested in pursuing any further criminal charges against Roy.
