Some not happy about pop-up artwork on southeast side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Odd artwork is popping up on people’s property near the city’s southeast side.

Some think the design is a strange looking turkey or an alien.

“Oscar is a lady and a man bug that is the mascot for a mentorship program for kids I just started,” creator Brenda Atwater said. “I wanted to attract attention.”

24-Hour News 8 asked for a tour inside the facility and was told maybe another time. The pamphlet Atwater passes out only has a few pictures and email addresses.

Oscar has been showing up, nailed to fences or placed on doorsteps along Franklin, English and Beechwood. Atwater smiled when asked why they are showing up on people’s property — she denied putting them there.

“Oscar serves another purpose,” Atwater said. “We have had a few break-ins. It protects our property.”

“Do what you want on your own property,” homeowner Desiree Brown said. “Build a statue of it if you want, just don’t put it on my fence.”

“If she is trying to promote a business, that’s a bad way to do so,” said Mike Tuttle, who lives a few doors away. “I think it’s ridiculous and don’t see how it would be a great image to promote a kids program.”
