BBB warns businesses of spoofed emails

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Better Business Bureau said Monday in a news release it has no connection to an email sent to businesses across the U.S. masquerading as a “standard business questionnaire.”

The email, designed to appear as an official bureau survey, is a phishing scam, according to BBB officials. Sent to thousands of businesses last Friday, the message includes a ZIP file that links to a malware site after being opened, the officials said in the release.

Other groups, including large corporations and government entities like the FBI, have previously been victimized by spoofing tactics.

Bureau representatives said the originating domain name, BBBL.org, is registered to someone in Europe. The BBB said it plans to turn over all information available to the FBI and Interpol.

The BBB said those receiving these emails should avoid opening attachments or links within the message. The bureau also said recipients should contact their Internet Service Providers to report the message.
