INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man police accused of leading a vicious crime ring faced a judge Thursday.

Richard Grundy Jr. is being charged with conspiracy to commit murder after he and four other men are accused of firing shots at Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers. The shooting happened late last week during a drug investigation.

Police are tying an alleged drug house to Grundy and four other men. In that home police found guns, drug paraphernalia and nearly $110,000 in cash.

During Grundy’s hearing he said very little. A judge entered a not guilty plea on Grundy’s behalf.

According to a probable cause affidavit, in 2014 Grundy had several phone conversations with alleged hit man John Means. In that case, the two are accused of talking about two double homicides in the city. When talking on the phone the men substituted the phrase double homicide for double cheeseburger.

“This case is going to unravel like a cheap sweater,” said Grundy’s Attorney David Hennessy.

Grundy’s bond has been set at $150,000. The other four men charged are Adrian Bullock, Ronnie Batts, William Gammon and Lance Hatcher.

Deputy Prosecutor Denise Robinson has not ruled out that Grundy could face more charges. She also feels confident about the witness testimony in the case.

“Our witnesses are police officers. This case is a little different; we don’t have civilian witnesses,” said Robinson.
