Police: City salt truck hits pedestrian

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Emergency crews were called to the northwest side around 5:00 a.m. Thursday after police say a City of Indianapolis salt truck hit a pedestrian.

The accident involving the city vehicle happened on 56th Street on the bridge over Eagle Creek Reservoir, near Dandy Trail.

IMPD said the man was either riding on or walking with his bike when he was hit by the salt truck. IMPD said he taken to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and he is listed in fair condition.

Police say the driver of the salt truck is being tested for alcohol as a part of standard operating procedures for the city.

The stretch of roadway was fully re-opened just after 6:30 a.m.

DPW’s Director, Andy Lutz, released the following statement about the accident:

“This is a tragic accident that is extremely traumatic for both the pedestrian and the Indy Snow Force driver involved. Our thoughts are with the pedestrian and his family. While we have no reason to believe the plow driver was impaired in any way, we are following all procedures prescribed for these types of events and will work with IMPD and other officials to further investigate the details surrounding this incident.”
