Zoeller: Tax season is scam season

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Attorney General’s (AG) Office has received an increase of complaints in January and February from consumers receiving phone calls from criminals calling and claiming to be the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The AG’s office says some of the scam artists have threatened consumers and have informed them that charges have been filed against them in court.

The AG’s office would like to remind Hoosiers that anyone who receives a call from the IRS that is threatening in nature should:

  • Immediately hang up and dial police.
  • If you think you have been targeted by an IRS scam, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to confirm that the call was fraudulent.
  • You can also file a report if you feel you have been a victim of a scam with the Attorney General’s Office by filing out the online form here.

This reminder comes on the heels of the Anthem data breach.
