Duke Energy warns customers of scam

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Due to recent bill payment scams, Duke Energy is urging customers to be alert.

Duke Energy said customers may receive a phone call from someone who falsely claims to be a Duke Energy representative.

The company says Duke Energy customers will have their electric service disconnected if they do not make an immediate payment.

The fake representatives are telling people to purchase a prepaid debit card at a store and urge the customer to call back to make a payment to Duke Energy.

According to Duke Energy, they never ask customers with a balance to purchase a prepaid debit card to avoid electric service disconnection.

The company urges customers who suspect or experience fraud to hang up and call police, then call Duke Energy in Indiana at 1-800-521-2232
