School resource officers changing students’ lives

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – Seven Fishers Police school recourse officers oversee 21,000 students within Hamilton County.

“They go above and beyond what is expected of them,” Mayor Scott Fadness said.

Their main job is to keep students and faculty safe but according to many parents, they do much more than that.

The school resource officers attend ball games after hours to show support. They also consult with parents and relay resources available to help those in need better their lives.

“They spend extra time with the students, mentor them, play basketball or help them with their homework. One officer is known for traveling to the dozen elementary schools to share safe ‘lockdown’ procedures after hours,” Fishers school resource officer Lieutenant Mike Johnson said.

“This is not just a 9-5 job for them. They like to connect with these kids and make a difference in their lives. I feel like I’ve become a big brother. Some don’t have a positive role model in their life. It lets them know we really care about them. That goes a long way,” Officer Shawn Wynn said.
