Bill for educators to advance moves to Indiana Senate

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana House of Representatives passed legislation Monday that will help school corporations establish career pathways for teachers.

According to Stand for Children Indiana, the bill would encourage school districts to revise teacher compensation and create opportunities for educators to advance professionally within their field.

They said the bill would establish a fund for districts to help them transition to a professional pay schedule, provide opportunities for teachers to earn raises by taking on additional leadership roles, and ensure district plans involve the creation of teacher teams and time for professional development.

“Teaching is one of the most important professions in our state, yet too many great educators are forced to leave the classroom and go into administration just to get a salary boost,” said Stand Indiana Executive Director Justin Ohlemiller. “We need to change the culture in our state to keep top teacher talent working with our state’s most important resource – its children.”

They said the House voted 95-2 in favor of the bill.

The bill will now move onto the Indiana Senate for consideration.
