LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — The Lawrence Police Department is hoping the public can help identify a driver that ran over a person, leaving them critically injured.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the 8700 block of Pendleton Pike, which is between North Post Road and East 46th Street.

Video from a nearby business shows a man try to cross the street at night. Then an eastbound car hits the man, propelling him over the car and into the street. Witnesses said the car stopped further east and a driver got out of the car to check the damage before driving off. The driver may have been a woman, and the car should be damaged on the front and possibly passenger side.

Police don’t have a clear description of the driver or the type of car involved. Initially, witnesses told police it may be a Dodge Charger or similar style vehicle. However, evidence from the scene suggests the car could be a medium or dark blue Ford or Saturn.

Police have not named the victim in the case. He is in the intensive care unit of a local hospital after suffering broken bones and internal injuries.

“We’d like for you (the driver) to turn yourself in and take accountability for what occurred and explain what happened,” said Lawrence Police Captain Gary Woodruff.

Investigators are deeply bothered that the suspect would check on the damage to the vehicle and not check on the victim.

“It’s troublesome this was a person who was seriously injured,” said Woodruff.

The victim’s family did not wish to do any interviews, nor did the business that provided the video.

Anyone with information should call Lawrence Police at 317-545-7575. Anonymous tips can be given to Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
