Police race after suspect in car, on foot

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A police car pursuit that transitioned to a chase on foot led to the arrest of a South Bend man on Friday.

At approximately 1:59 p.m., Indiana State police pulled over a 2007 Ford Taurus for speeding. When police approached the car, they reported smelling marijuana.

After a quick search of the car, police said they found a plant-like substance in two baggies in the glove compartment.

It was at this time that the driver, identified as Tommie Payne IV, 23, of South Bend, reportedly drove away.

Police pursued the runaway suspect for several minutes, going at reported speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

When police employed stop sticks at US 31 at Eel River Cemetary Road, the car crashed and the driver fled on foot.

According to reports, the suspect soon surrendered because he realized he was surrounded by assisting ISP.

The suspectwas was transported to Miami County Jail and faces possible misdemeanor charges of criminal recklessness and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with endangerment.
