Northern Indiana police issue warning about IRS scam

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana police department has issued a warning that someone is using its non-emergency telephone number as part of a scam.

Lafayette police say the scam involves people posing as IRS agents who “clone” the department telephone number to make it appear police are involved. The callers say they are collecting overdue taxes. Police say officers would not call to try to collect taxes.

Police say anyone who receives such a call should hang up. They should not send any money.

Police say people with questions about tax issues should call the IRS.
