Application process opens for ‘On My Way Pre-k’

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Applications are now being accepted for a new preschool program that gets underway this fall.

At least 6,000 kids are living in local households making below the poverty level, 1,000 of those households will be eligible to enroll in the “Indy Preschool Scholarship Program.”

Starting Tuesday, families making less than $24,000 can apply on the cities website. The child has to be between three and five years old and live in Marion County. The applications will be accepted until April 30. If more families qualify than there are grants available, awards will be made through a randomized lottery process held on May 4.

“Research shows, a great high quality preschool program will help a child be successful in school and later on in life. It’s not a magic bullet,” Ted Maple with Early Learning Indiana said.

Beth Stroh, director of education for United Way of Central Indiana, said she hoped it was the beginning of all children receiving early education regardless of economic status.
