Child pulled from house fire passes away
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The child who was pulled from a house fire in Fort Wayne on Saturday passed away Wednesday morning.
According to the report from the Allen County Coroner, Jelan Whitten-Strother died at 5:13 a.m. from a brain injury due to smoke inhalation.
WISH-TV sister station WANE News reported he had been declared brain dead on Sunday and remained on life support until his death.
Neighbors were able to help pull three adults and a baby to safety out of the Fleming Avenue home, but could not get to the 8-year-old boy.
Firefighters went in and were able to get to the child. They treated him at the scene before medics arrived and took him to a hospital in critical condition.
The last word from the Fort Wayne Fire Department was that the cause of the fire was under investigation.
