Confirmed cases of chickenpox at Carmel Clay Schools

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – A letter went out to parents on Thursday confirming cases of chickenpox at Carmel Clay Schools.

Parents of Carmel High School, Clay Middle School and Woodbrook Elementary students received the letter. The number of cases has not been confirmed to 24-Hour News 8.

Indiana law requires that all students enrolled in kindergarten through their senior year of high school have two doses of the chickenpox vaccine, unless the student has history of the disease.

Students that have received the vaccine can still catch chickenpox.

The Indiana State Department of Health has a website called MyVaxIndiana that can allow parents to view their child’s vaccination record online.

The link can be found here.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends two doses of the chickenpox vaccine for everyone. The CDC says two doses of the vaccine is about 98 percent effective against chickenpox.

Children should receive their first dose of the chickenpox vaccine at 12-15 months old and the second dose at 4-6 years old. The second dose may be given at an earlier age if it is given at least three months after the first dose. People 13 years and older who have never been vaccinated nor had chickenpox should get two doses at least 28 days apart.
