Third graders in Fishers are helping to fill food pantries

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – Kids going to school hungry is a growing issue throughout the state of Indiana, including in Fishers.

Third graders at Brooks Elementary and their teacher Miss Stewart want to help families that are struggling to put quality food on the table.

There isn’t a lack of passion to create change in Stewart’s classroom. She runs a tight ship and in a loving way hopes to impact each one of her 24 students.

“People in Fishers don’t realize that this issue exists, (that) there are people in neighborhoods close by who go to food pantries locally. I want every child to come to school well fed and nourished. They shouldn’t  have to think or worry about that,” Stewart says.

“Poverty and hunger cross boundaries,” said Stewart. “There are families in HSE Schools who are in need. The Backsack Program has been a big help. HSE partnered with Gleanors. Volunteers stuff 50 to 60 back packs filled with nutritious foods to help carry a child over during the weekend. Every little bit helps, but there is still a lot more that needs to be done.”

The third graders hope community members will donate to local food pantries to help stock bare shelves at these locations:
