Life without parole requested in child’s death

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office filed a request this week for a life sentence without parole against an Indianapolis man charged in a 3-year-old child’s death last year.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry filed the request against Freddie Bailey. Bailey is charged with murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in death in connection with the death of Amabel Calderon.

According to court documents, the girl had severe injuries to her entire body. Doctors treating her at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health said she had bruising to her face and nose and bite marks over most of her body.

Court documents said the girl’s mother, Maria Calderon, told investigators the girl fell between the bathtub and toilet and hit her head. Bailey, Maria Calderon’s then-boyfriend, later told investigators he put the girl in the corner because she had been acting up. Court documents said he repeatedly shoved the girl’s head and face into the corner at least 10 times.

Bailey also admitted to detectives to biting the girl. He said he picked her up in the air with only his teeth.

Maria Calderon is charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death and two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury in the case.

Officials say the aggravating circumstances in the state’s request for a life sentence without parole against Bailey are that he did burn, mutilate, or torture the victim while she was alive and that the victim was a child less than 12 years of age.

Bailey is also charged with three counts of battery for injuries sustained by Amabel’s 5-year-old brother and 1-year-old sister.
