5-course dinner shows homeless people they are worth more

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) About 200 people who usually eat at The Rescue Mission each night sat down to a different type of meal Friday.

Live jazz filled the room, tables were covered with table cloths and candles, all for a 5-course meal prepared by The Rescue Mission staff and residents, according to WISH-TV sister station WANE News.

“There’s magic in this,” said Don Lindlag, a chef at The Rescue Mission in a statement. “When you go above and beyond like this … to not just feed people but to take the time to show them that they are worth more, that they deserve more…there’s something really special that happens in that person.”

People were served bacon wrapped fillets, pork ribs, Italian seasoned baked potatoes, Italian style green beans, sage dressing, potato salad, fresh cheese, fresh fruit, along with assorted fresh pastries and desserts.

It took two days to prepare the meal, which was made from scratch.

“Every one of the people that has come through here tonight has been so thankful and left with a huge grin on their face,” Lindlag said.

This dinner was made possible with donations from Gordon’s Food Service and F. McConnell and Sons.

The Rescue Mission has four main programs in Fort Wayne including Life House, Restoration House, Charis House and Treasure House.
