Father, son rescued after canoe tips over in Big Blue River

SHELBY COUNTY (WISH) – A father and adult son are safe after their canoe capsized in the Big Blue River Saturday evening.

According to the Shelbyville Fire Department, a father and his 22-year-old son from Greenwood Indiana were canoeing near Marietta Ind. when their canoe capsized just before 8 p.m. Saturday. Luckily they had a cell phone to call for help.

Rescuers were able to locate the men in a remote location, hanging onto a log. Crews used a rope to secure them and get them out of the water.

Both were taken to Major Hospital in Shelbyville in stable condition with slight hypothermia.

Marietta Fire Department, Shelby Swift Water Rescue, Shelby Co Sheriff’s Department and Shelbyville Fire responded to the scene.
