Lawrence PD locates driver involved in hit-and-run
LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – This afternoon Lawrence Police identified the suspect in a hit and run crash that left a man seriously injured.
Victor Ramirez is listed in stable condition at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital.
As police wrap up their criminal investigation they say Ramirez is a lucky man.
“It’s amazing that he survived,” said Capt. Gary Woodruff with the Lawrence Police Department. “Considering the circumstances he’s very fortunate.
The crash happened February 21 in the 8700 block of Pendleton Pike. But the blue 2009 Dodge Charger with no license plates wasn’t found until Friday morning, abandoned nearly 25 miles away, off of 236th street. The car had a cracked windshield and dents in the hood.
“He [Ramirez] has a long road ahead, a lot of rehab, maybe some additional surgeries,” said Woodruff.
A video captured from a nearby business shows others stopping to help, but the driver drove off.
“There’s the duty just as a human being when you strike somebody, if something like that occurs to stay and render aid,” said Woodruff.
Police say they were able to match the car to the accident by debris left at the scene.
“Some of those parts matched up perfectly. Just like the pieces of a puzzle, literally,” said Woodruff.
Police are still putting the puzzle together as they prepare to hand the case over to Marion County Prosecutors.
Police haven’t released the 27-year-old driver’s name, but they say she is now cooperating. They say she’s arranged to turn herself in once the investigation is complete.
