COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) – In a story March 8 about a sheriff’s office forwarding a case to the FBI, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers had suspended three deputies in connection with the death of a Columbus man. Former Sheriff Mark Gorbett suspended the deputies in 2013; Myers took office in January.

Central Indiana sheriff’s department sends results of death investigation to FBI

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) – A central Indiana sheriff’s department has forwarded results of an investigation into a man dying from a gunshot wound to the FBI.

The death of Cary Owsley in April 2013 initially was ruled a suicide by the Bartholomew County coroner without an autopsy. Former Sheriff Mark Gorbett suspended three deputies three months later for “errors in judgment” during the investigation. Owsley was married to the one of those deputies’ ex-wife.

Owsley’s sister, Cheryl Jackson, led a campaign to have his remains exhumed and tested by two medical examiners, who ruled his cause of death to be undetermined.

The Republic reports sheriff’s department attorney Jeffrey Beck pointed out in a letter to the FBI and Department of Justice that those agencies previously saw no reason to extend the investigation.
