All-women’s Wellesley College to admit transgender students

Members of the 2002 graduating class at Wellesley College participate in the 107th annual hoop roll on the college campus in Wellesley, Mass., Saturday, April 27, 2002. Traditionally, the winner of this contest, which first began in 1895, was said to be the first in her class to marry, but now the victory is seen as a sign that the winner will be the first to achieve success. WELLESLEY, Mass. (AP) — Wellesley College is joining a growing list of women’s colleges that accept transgender students.

President H. Kim Bottomly and trustees’ chairwoman Laura Daignault Gates said in a letter Wednesday that “Wellesley will consider for admission any applicant who lives as a woman and consistently identifies as a woman.”

Transgender men are not eligible for admission to the private liberal arts college.

The policy is expected to be in place for the next admission cycle for the Class of 2020.

The policy approved by trustees Wednesday came after Bottomly formed a committee last fall to study educational, social, legal and medical considerations about gender identity.

Mount Holyoke and Simmons in Massachusetts as well as Mills College in California also have policies addressing the admission of transgender students. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
