ISMA hard-drive theft affects over 39,000

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA) has reported a computer equipment theft that could affect the personal identification information of over 39,000 people.

ISMA announced that two archive back-up hard drives were stolen on Feb. 13 while an ISMA employee was transporting the drives to an off-site storage facility.

According to ISMA, information held within the drives includes names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, health plan numbers, Social Security numbers and personal medical history information.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were notified and are actively investigating the crime.

ISMA is confident that information on the hard drives cannot be accessed without special equipment and expertise.

Notification letters were sent by the ISMA to all of the 39,090 people affected in the theft. ISMA has offered one year of credit monitoring and repair services at no cost to all those affected.

Affected individuals can call 888-774-3252 or click here for more information.

ISMA has stated that although their insurance plans are through Anthem, this theft is completely separate from the recent cyber attack on Anthem.
