Police: Lafayette teen tried to use machete to rob blind woman

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Lafayette teen faces charges after police say he tried to rob a blind woman with a machete and pellet gun.

According to court documents, Luis Torres, 18, and two others tried to rob the woman at her apartment in the 2000 block of Greenbush Street in Lafayette Tuesday evening.

A neighbor called police when he saw what was going on.

Officers located Torres and a juvenile suspect across the street in the area of the Market Square, but say the third person got away. Torres had a knife and a machete when he was taken into custody.

Detectives say Torres told them they were trying to get marijuana from someone that the juvenile knew. A pellet gun was found in a nearby trash can.

Torres remains in the Tippecanoe County Jail on $2,500 cash bond plus $25,000 surety bond.
