Ballard makes pre-K ordinances official

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis City-County Council passed three pre-K ordinances last week, and Wednesday morning Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard made it official.

Mayor Ballard, council members and members of the United Way attended the signing. The ceremony was held at St. Mary’s Child Center. More than $4 million will help jump start the program.

An estimated 6,000 to 12,000 kids are eligible to enroll. About 1,000 children that are at least three years old and no more than five years old can apply for scholarships.

“This really is a day of celebration. I’m so glad so many kids are here to see this. And echo the fact that they are being very good! As I said the night that this program passed, this program is the perfect example of how progress can be made when all parties work together to do what is in the best interest for our city for the long term,” said Ballard.

Eligible kids must live in Marion County and in a household that makes less than $24,000 a year. Applications will be accepted until April 30.
