I-65 reopens after fatal crashes cause over 15-hour closure

TIPPECANOE CO., Ind. (WLFI) – Authorities report northbound Interstate 65 reopened between Tippecanoe and White counties after multiple fatal crashes brought the interstate to a halt in both directions. I-65 was closed down for more than 15 hours, beginning Tuesday night.

The identities of the two people killed have not been released, but authorities said they died in two separate crashes. The first person was killed in a crash involving one semi. However, police said a baby in the back seat survived.

In a separate pileup, a person was killed in the northbound lanes. That pileup included six semis, a van and two cars. Indiana State Police officials said two semis collided and the load of one of them broke through the cab, killing the driver.

Investigators said it appears to have been caused by drivers slowing and stopping for the first crash. Police believe the dense fog was a contributing factor.
