Residents push for changes at abandoned apartment complex

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Elizabeth Durden sees potential as she walks near 42nd and Post Road. On that corner sits a massive apartment complex called Oak Tree.

Back in February of 2014, Marion County Health Department shut down the complex because of the deplorable conditions held within.

Since then, the complex has remained empty. Broken windows, a dangling gutter, and decaying units continued to deteriorate.

Currently, there are no signs that indicate improvements are on the way.

“They haven’t told us anything. That is the sad part; we don’t know what’s going to go on,” said Durden.

While the property sits in limbo, Durden is pushing for the grounds to be turned into a spray park, or just a park for kids.

“If we can bring stuff like that in this community, it will make a world of difference,” said Durden.

24-Hour News 8 discovered the property was recently included in a tax sale, but no one purchased it.

The previous owner can now redeem the property, if unpaid taxes are paid and repairs are made.

No word yet if the previous owner plans on making those changes.

Until then, Durden will have to wait to see what the future holds for Oak Tree Apartments.
