IU Health offers unique opportunity to train EMS

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – IU Health offered a free cadaver lab for Emergency Medical Responders.

The rare opportunity was organized to teach life-saving techniques. The six-hour session was held in a mock Emergency Room setting.

With surgical instruments in hand, EMS crews from local agencies spent their afternoon practicing advanced procedures like chest tube insertions and needle chest decompressions.

The daylong session was taught by 12 IU Heath trauma surgeons working in Indiana’s largest and busiest Level One Trauma Center. They help repair 3,600 injuries each year.

What made this training session unique, they practiced on cadavers that were donated and shipped from a medical research company based in Tennessee.

The unique training session is one of many that will be offered for free to EMS personnel.

The next one will be held towards the end of summer.

Today participants will receive feedback on new or quicker techniques used to save lives, said EMT trainer Aaron Jeanett.

IU Health Coordinator Gene Ford said, the small group format gives EMS crews a hands on experience before they are faced with a real life emergency.
