Downtown Indy church archway collapses

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A street in downtown Indianapolis was blocked off Tuesday morning after part of a historic church collapsed.

The Church of the Holy Cross on Oriental Street near Ohio was built in 1922.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, they were called to the church around 1:30 a.m.

Police say dozens of bricks fell from an archway in front of the building. DPW put up road blocks on Ohio Street as a safety precaution.

The priest of the church told 24-Hour News 8 that the building appears to be structurally sound, but there were concerns about a decorative arch on top of the entryway.

Engineers are scheduled look at the building Tuesday afternoon. If they give an OK, services will go on as planned this week.
