Crime in Fishers combated by businesses

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An increase of car burglaries at businesses in Fishers prompted a community meeting Wednesday.

The number of incidents reported are up this year compared to previous years according to the Fishers Police Department.

Store owners, managers and corporate executives attended the gathering to ask for advice to keep their employees and customers safe.

There will be more meetings in the future. Additional signage, brighter lights in parking lots and video cameras are on the agenda to be discussed at the next meeting.

“It’s become a serious problem that has impacted big chain hotels and small business owners,” VCA Cross Pointe Animal Hospital manager Jenna Zeiher said. “I noticed people and cars staying overnight. I never reported it because that seemed inappropriate.”

The Fishers Police Department said reporting suspicious behavior is the key to helping catch criminals.

“We’ve had a lot of success with the Neighborhood Crime Watch Program. That is why we wanted to implement those same tactics to form one for businesses. We want any and all suspicious behavior reported. Dialing 911 is appropriate so we can immediately respond to find out what is going on,” said Fishers Police Sgt. Tom Weger.
