FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) – Fort Wayne is installing closed-circuit television cameras at some of its busiest intersections, but officials say they won’t be used to write up bad drivers.

City officials say the 16 cameras will monitor road conditions and help emergency workers pinpoint the locations of collisions and reduce response times.

The Journal Gazette reports that footage from the cameras will be available to 911 dispatchers, the fire department, the street department and traffic operations. The city also hopes to extend access to the Indiana Department of Transportation and state police.

American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana spokeswoman Kelly Sharp says the cameras can serve a positive purpose but must be used in a way that doesn’t violate citizens’ rights.

Federal money will cover most of the cameras’ $240,000 cost.
