Indiana creates HIV awareness campaign as CDC descends
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A public awareness campaign has been launched in an effort to combat the HIV epidemic in southern Indiana.
The public awareness campaign is called ‘You are not alone’ and is focused on drug abuse, safe sex, needle disposal and HIV testing and treatment.
The campaign will be on television, social media, radio and billboards until June.
Indiana State Health officials have reported that there are 55 confirmed cases of HIV in southern Indiana and 13 additional preliminary cases since the outbreak was announced in Feb.
“I am deeply troubled by this outbreak, and stopping it is a top priority for our department,” said State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. “We are engaging local, state, and national partners to determine where we can most effectively focus our efforts.”
The Indiana State Department of Health has asked for support from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The team will arrive on Monday and will consist of two physicians and an epidemiologist.
State officials recommend that all Hoosiers know their HIV status.
