Southwestern Indiana city cancels its May primary

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) – Southwestern Indiana election officials have canceled the city of Vincennes’ May primary because for the first time in decades there are no contested races needing voters’ input.

Knox County Clerk-Treasurer Terri Allen says the county’s three-member election board recently voted to call off Vincennes’ primary election since there is no need to have one.

Allen says Vincennes will save about $20,000, if not more, by not holding a primary.

Allen tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial that election board members were “pretty surprised” that there were no contested races in the city’s slate of races.

She says that hasn’t happened in her quarter-century of working at the county courthouse in the city about 40 miles north of Evansville.

Election board member Bob Slayton calls the lack of contested races “very unusual.”
