Pennsylvania trooper helps deliver baby in convenience store lot

DUNCANNON, Pa. (WHTM) – A Pennsylvania trooper was off-duty and heading for home when he took on one last job: delivering a baby in a convenience store parking lot.

Trooper Mark Fisher came upon a disabled vehicle Tuesday night near the Watts exit of Route 322 in Perry County, stopped to check it out, and found a woman in active labor, state police spokesman Trooper Robert Hicks said.

The woman and her driver wanted to get to Holy Spirit Hospital and not wait for EMS, but the baby couldn’t wait either.

As Fisher and Corporal Brian Wolfe escorted the mother-to-be to the hospital, it became clear they wouldn’t make it in time, so they stopped at the Sheetz store near Perdix and called for emergency responders, Hicks said.

Once in the parking lot, however, the mother’s water broke and she went into rapid labor. Fisher, a former EMT, realized the baby was crowning quickly, so Wolfe went into the store to get towels and other supplies.

A short time later, Fisher delivered the seven-pound, 13-ounce baby girl in the back seat of her mother’s car.

Fisher cleaned the baby and watched over her until EMS arrived and transported mother and baby to Holy Spirit.

This morning, he stopped by the hospital to check on the family and to deliver a Pennsylvania State Police patch from the shirt he was wearing when he delivered the baby girl.

Hicks did not identify the family, but said mother, father, and child are all doing great.
